COHVCO Land Use Issues and Litigation

30+ Miles of New Trail: Merry Christmas from the Forest Service and COHVCO
Friday, December 5, 2003
Today, Bob Storch, the Forest Supervisor of the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, Gunnison National Forests signed a decision to open 30+ miles of roads and trails on the Grand Mesa that were previously closed to unlicensed dirt bikes and ATVs. This decision relates to an agreement between COHVCO and the Forest Service commonly known as the "100 mile agreement." That agreement was made nearly a decade ago when COHVCO and the Bob Storch's staff negotiated an agreement and COHVCO, along with eight other clubs and organizations dropped their appeal of the Grand Mesa Travel Plan.

The 30+ miles are the first known miles reopened after a travel decision to avoid an appeal. This additional mileage which is around half roads and half trails should be available to enjoy in the spring of 2004. COHVCO has agreed years ago to support the decision. We will be entering our comments in support of the decision and our legal staff will be ready to defend the decision, in court if necessary, as agreed. The OHV community must be, and is, good for its word.

The time taken by the Forest Service to do the job right has been long in coming. More than one false start happened. We, COHVCO, applaud the Forest Service staff for their time and energy spent to make the Forest Service's word good. It's a pleasure to work with honorable people.

Merry Christmas to the OHV community from the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, Gunnison National Forests and COHVCO, there are now 30+ more miles of roads and trails to ride.
