White River Travel Plan Needs Your Attention!
Thursday, October 12, 2006
Here is your chance to make the difference on what trails and roads stay open, and what is closed on Forest Service land. The entire White River National Forest is undergoing Travel Management and a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) has been released to the general public for review. With the DEIS comes four alternatives for roads, trails, and non-motorized access, and if we as a public do not let our voice be heard we will lose hundreds of mile of roads and trails within the following ranger districts: Silverthorne, Dillon, Sopris, Aspen, Eagle, Rifle, and Blanco. This area encompasses everything from Dillon through Vail to south of Aspen, across I-70 around Eagle, through Glenwood to Parachute and the Flat Tops; it is huge.
Now is the time to take action and let the Forest Service know that our trails are important to you, which trails they are, and why.

Send comments no later than October 26th to wrnftmp@contentanalysisgroup.com and let your voice be heard!

The snail mail address is:

Some examples of good comments are:
  • Trail number/name _______ on the ______ ranger district has important historical significance due to it ending at a mining site that is part of Colorado’s heritage. Losing motorized access to this trail inhibits visitors to explore and learn about Colorado in the mining era.
  • Trail number/name ________ on the ____ ranger district leads to a gorgeous overlook for viewing scenery, which is a top recreation activity on the White River NF that should not be removed.
  • Trail number/name_____ on the ____ ranger district is adopted by _____ club who maintains the trail and has put $_____ dollars on the ground to maintaining this trail and its experience.
  • Trail number/name____ on the ___ ranger district is extremely important to the hunting industry as it is a main motorized route to access other prime hunting areas both motorized and non-motorized.
  • I support comments submitted by COHVCO and the Blue Ribbon Coalition.
  • Motorized recreation is an important revenue generating activity for gateway communities to the White River National Forest and would impact those communities heavily if motorized opportunity is significantly decreased.
  • I strongly oppose the statement found on the bottom of page 69 of the DEIS: Any future trail expansion will likely have to rely on user groups to assist in taking on the costs associated with planning, construction and maintenance of those routes. No user group should have to pay for NEPA, planning, construction, maintenance, or the possibility of fee areas post construction of a road or trail.
  • I strongly disagree with the Forest Use Levels outlined on pages 59 and 60 of the DEIS as they are inaccurately representing motorized recreation use by not including it in the top 10 activities on the White River National Forest.

Comments that DO NOT work are:
  • I like ____ trail because it’s a good trail.

Do not lose your favorite trails because you though someone else was doing your work for you. The more voices heard, the better off motorized recreation will be in maintaining substantial mileage within the White River National Forest. Don’t snooze, get your comments in today!!!!
